Jean-Michel Aubry studied medicine at the University of Geneva, St George's Hospital in London and in several university hospitals in Australia. Between 1994 and 1996, he did a postdoctoral fellowship at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego, USA, with the support of the SNSF. Obtaining the title of FMH Specialist in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in 1998, he then devoted himself mainly to the treatment of mood disorders, particularly bipolar disorders, with the establishment of a multidisciplinary care programme which has become a widely recognised centre of expertise in Switzerland and internationally. The central theme of its research is the neurobiology of mood disorders, as well as the prevention of thymic recurrence and the search for vulnerability factors, with also genetic studies on bipolar disorders and the pharmacogenetics of lithium. Jean-Michel Aubry is the author of some 100 articles and has published several books in the field of bipolar disorders. He was appointed full professor in the Department of Psychiatry of the Faculty of Medicine in April 2012.
